Oakland Youth Orchestra to hold
auditions for 2008-2009 season

The Oakland Youth Orchestra will hold auditions for the 2008-2009 season on May 21-23 at the Malonga Arts Center in Oakland.
   OYO currently has openings for all orchestral instruments, including violin, viola, cello, bass violin, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, tenor trombone, alto trombone, bass trombone, tuba, harp and percussion.
    Advanced players ages 12- 22 who are receiving private instruction are encouraged to apply. Candidates will be asked to play a solo, a specified scale and an orchestra excerpt that will be mailed after completing an audition application.
    To sign up for an audition, email manager@oyo.org or call (510) 832-7710. Provide your name, address, date of birth and instrument, and an application will be mailed or emailed to you.
    The 2008-2009 OYO season will feature a side-by-side concert with the Oakland East Bay Symphony on the stage of the Paramount Theatre. The year’s repertoire includes Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, the Beethoven Symphony No. 5, Brahms’ Hungarian Dances and the Shostakovich Symphony No. 5.
    Artistic director Michael Morgan was born in Washington, D.C., where he began conducting at the age of 12. While a student at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, he spent a summer at the Tanglewood Berkshire Music Center and worked with Leonard Bernstein. Morgan is a noted teacher of conducting and advocate for music education in Oakland and around the world.
    Principal conductor Bryan Nies holds the prestigious Bruno Walter Assistant Conductor Chair with the Oakland East Bay Symphony, is assistant conductor of Opera San Jose and an assistant conductor of Festival Opera in Walnut Creek.
