Lee hosts congressional high school arts competition

By Clifford L. Williams,
Globe City Editor

Congresswoman Barbara Lee hosted the “An Artistic Discovery” recognition ceremony on Saturday at the Chiodo Art Development Studio to honor student artists throughout the Bay Area.

An Artistic Discovery is an annual congressional high school arts competition that recognizes emerging student artists. An estimated 50 students, representing public and private schools throughout the 9th congressional district, competed in the event, which marked the 26th year of the national competition and the 10th year Lee has hosted the event locally.
“I considered it a privilege to participate in this important ceremony to highlight the wonderful young talent we have here in my congressional district,” said Lee.
First place winner Sophia Blum from Berkeley High School received three roundtrip tickets from Southwest Airlines to fly to Washington, D.C., for a formal reception in June. Her work will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.
Second place winner Courtney Morrison from Castro Valley High School was invited to tour the Pixar Animation Studies in Emeryville.
The third place prize, a gift certificate from Artist and Craftsmen Supply Store in Berkeley, went to Amanda Swain from Berkeley High School.
Fourth place winner Kellyann Estrem from Holy Names High School received a gift certificate from Bay Street in Emeryville.
Members of the House of Representatives initiated the high school art contest in 1982 to celebrate and encourage the creative talents of the nations’ youth.
For more information on the competition, contact Elaine McKellar at (510) 763-0370.
