Sampras to play in exhibition match in Tiburon

From the Globe Sports Desk

Tennis great Pete Sampras will join an all-star lineup of former Pacific 10 Conference tennis stars in the first-ever Hennessy Funds Alumni Legends Cup on Sept. 7-9 at the Tiburon Peninsula Club, located at 1600 Mar West St. in Tiburon.
Amidst rumors of a potential return to professional tennis, Sampras will play an exhibition match against Santa Rosa native and current tour pro Sam Querrey on Sunday, Sept. 9 in front of a crowd of approximately 2,500 spectators. This intimate setting will provide fans and media alike with an opportunity for a rare look at one of the game’s greatest players. The Hennessy Funds Alumni Legends Cup weekend will capture the excitement and emotion of some of collegiate tennis’ best rivalries, including matchups between Pac-10 powerhouses UCLA, USC, Cal and Stanford. Twenty alumni players, including Justin Gimelstod of UCLA, Paul Goldstein of Stanford and Steve Devries of CAl, have been selected to represent their specific generation for their alma mater.
A portion of the proceeds from the tournament will go to the men’s tennis programs at Cal, Stanford, UCLA and USC, as well as Athletes for Life, a nonprofit organization providing guidance and leadership programs to young athletes throughout California since 1989.
