The Skyline
High School Jazz Band took home top honors at the
45th annual Reno Jazz Festival last month.

It was the first time since the mid
1960s that the band, which took second place in its division, was recognized.
The Skyline band competed against 17 other bands from four states to tie for
second place in its division. It was one of more than 330 middle, high school
and college groups participating in the University of Nevada-sponsored event,
one of the oldest and largest educational jazz festivals in the Western United
States.
The band is directed by Ted Allen, and the group’s success is an
indication of the revival of music education in the Oakland Public Schools.
World-class
jazz artists, music educators and thousands of jazz students spend three days
immersed in live-jazz performance, competitions and clinics. |
