Fireworks
will not light up the skies in Oakland’s
Jack London Square this Fourth of July because
of construction in the area, according to the
Port of Oakland.
Since there won’t
be a show, the Port of Oakland announced this that they are adding fireworks
to the World Music and Jazz Festival on July 28 at Middle Harbor Shoreline
Park.
“A lot of people felt that Oakland should have fireworks,” said
Port of Oakland spokeswoman Libby Schaaf. The park is at the end of 7th street
on the water where there is a view of the Bay Bridge, said Schaaf.
The festival
starts at 11 a.m. and will have a lineup of jazz and world music as well as
an artisan fair and a kids craft zone, Schaaf said.
As summer festivities get
into full swing, police warn residents to stay safe. Each year more than 9,300
people are injured as a result of using illegal fireworks, as well as millions
of dollars in property damage nationwide, according to police.
It is illegal
to buy, sell, transfer, use or possess fireworks in the city. Aperson cited
for such violations can face fines of up to $1,000.
“It’s just
not worth it,” Sgt. Michael Poirier said today. The city has designated
locations where people can drop off fireworks, no questions asked.
