Students
attending professional schools at two Bay Area University
of California campuses will see fee increases beginning
this winter, the university announced.
UC Regents approved additional fee increases for professional
school students beginning in the winter quarter/spring
semester of the 2005-06 year. The increases will affect
professional programs like law, business, nursing
and medicine at UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco.
The increase amounts vary by school and range from
$136 to $718, according to the university. The university
reported that the increased fees reflect the impact
of state budget cuts.
As a result of the cuts, the university lost 15 percent
of its state funding at a time when populationdriven
enrollments have increased by 19 percent.
The 2004-05 state budget cut professional school budgets
by more than $42 million, according to the university.
Fees could only be increased by $37 million, leaving
the university with a $5 million funding gap.

The
regents also approved additional, temporary fee increases
in response to a revenue shortfall created by a court
order that prohibited the university from increasing
professional school fees above the 2003-04 level for
students who first enrolled in professional school prior
to December 2002.
An educational fee increase of $700 for 2005-06 will
begin in the winter quarter/spring semester 2006. An
additional increase of $350 will be levied for 2006-07.
The $1,050 total increase will expire at the end of
the 2006-07 year.
The regents also approved a surcharge of $60 in the
educational fee for all enrolled students in 2006-07.
The surcharge begins after the $1,050 professional fee
increase expires.
The fee will be charged until the costs associated with
the court order are covered, the university reported.
Some 25 percent of the new fee revenue will be set aside
for financial aid, according to the university. |
